Initially, Tullys was asked to assess the feasibility of delivering roof top extensions at nine potential sites across the London Borough of Hounslow, along with the appointed contractor, United Living. From these visual inspections seven sites were selected to carry out further investigations on.
Tullys led the specification and management of essential intrusive structural investigations to establish the existing buildings’ form of construction and condition and to therefore establish which were suitable to receive an additional storey. From the results, back analysis could be carried out to prove if the buildings could be vertically extended. Following this, and consultation with the client and Architect, five buildings were deemed suitable to take forward. Through the employment of a hot rolled steel transfer deck at roof level, then utilising a cold rolled steel panelised system, constructed off-site, to provide the new roof top units, the additional loading to the buildings was kept to a minimum. This mitigated the need for time consuming and expensive strengthening works to both the superstructure and foundations. To minimise disruption to the residents these works were able to be carried out with them all left in-situ. Thus, also negating the requirements for expensive and time-consuming decanting.
